Do’s & Don’ts of MLP Curbside Consults
Description
Curbside Consults are an important part of medical-legal partnership practice. They are a conversation (in person or via messages) between a healthcare team member and the legal team to assess whether a situation with a patient is appropriate for referral to the legal team. In a typical Curbside Consult, the legal team never meets or receives any identifying information about the patient, if there is one, who inspired the legal question. Curbside Consults are also a chance to provide legal education in response to healthcare team members’ questions about general legal topics.
This job aid can help front-line healthcare staff understand the “do’s and don’ts” of Curbside Consults, including what types of questions can be asked and what type of information can be shared.
It was created for Kaiser Permanente’s medical-legal partnerships. Other medical-legal partnerships can use this job aid as a sample and a starting place for how to handle Curbside Consults. However, the specific information should be reviewed and edited locally as practices may be different.
