Hospitals

The Hospital Landscape

Medical-legal partnerships are based in a full range of hospital settings, from large multi-specialty academic medical centers to smaller community hospitals, from private, not-for-profit institutions to ones that are publicly funded.  Many of these hospital settings train residents in different specialties and some also have fellowship programs in such areas as geriatrics and oncology.

  • Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH)A hospital that receives special Medicaid or Medicaid payments for serving a large number of low-income patients.  Medicaid DSH payments are the largest source of federal funding for uncompensated hospital care.
  • Children's Hospital: A hospital that serves exclusively children and is a member of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI).
  • Public Hospital: A hospital owned and operated by federal, state, or city government.  Many have a tradition of caring for the poor and are usually located in inner cities.  Many of their patients are unable to pay for services and the hospital depends heavily on Medicaid payments.
  • Teaching Hospital: A hospital that: (1) trains medical students and resident physicians; (2) conducts basic science and clinical investigation; (3) delivers healthcare services; and, (4) is a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges.
