Federal Demonstration Project Language
Medical-Legal Partnership & Health Care Reform -- A Major Leap Forward! We are thrilled to report that, thanks to the wonderful leadership of Rep. Chris Murphy (D-CT), Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) and Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), the House healthcare reform bill includes Section 2537, which calls for a federal demonstration project for medical-legal partnership. We salute the MLPs in many districts, especially Connecticut and Michigan, for their intrepid efforts to respond to inquiries about their wonderful work, which was pivotal to rallying legislative support.
While we recognize that the prohibitions in the language may pose challenges for both medical and legal partners, we are deeply committed to the hard work necessary to bring about a federal investment in medical-legal partnerships across the country. We look forward to sharing the status and analysis of this new opportunity with you in the coming days, weeks and months, as well as how you can support this effort.
The embrace of medical-legal partnership at this level is a testament to the incredibly hard work that is being done in communities throughout the country. Your innovation, dedication and vision has been crucial to expanding the impact, visibility and potential for this model. Congratulations! Please contact NCMLP Executive Director Ellen Lawton at Ellen.Lawton@bmc.org if you have any questions or suggestions. We are eager to hear from you!
