Medical Legal Collaboration for Kentucky Children Established

A new program for pediatric patients at the University of Kentucky draws on the strengths of the medical and legal professions to reduce health care disparities for low-income families. The University of Kentucky College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics and Kentucky Children's Hospital have collaborated with the Access to Justice Foundation through the Kentucky Volunteer Lawyer Program to establish Child Advocacy Today (CAT). The first program of its kind in Kentucky, CAT brings pediatricians and lawyers together, drawing on the strengths of the professions, to ensure that families can meet the basic needs crucial to a child’s health and development.

In November 2007, the Kentucky Bar Association passed a resolution in support of a medical-legal partnership for Kentucky's children.

THEREFORE, NOW BE IT RESOLVED,

That, the Board of Governors of the Kentucky Bar Association encourages lawyers, law firms, legal services agencies, law schools and local bar associations to promote and provide broader access to legal services for these children and their families by willingly volunteering their services pro bono and financially supporting pro bono programs as a means for our profession to contribute to the advancement and betterment of our Commonwealth.
