MLP Medical Directors Named RWJF Health Policy Fellows

Dr. David Keller and Dr. Shale Wong have been selected as two of ten Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows for 2009–2010. Fellows utilize their wide range of academic, public health, clinical and community-based experience to provide health policy leadership on Capitol Hill to improve health and health care during a 12-month fellowship in Washington, D.C.

David M. Keller, M.D., FAAP, credits the [Healthy Tomorrows] grant with giving his program — Family Advocates of Central Massachusetts — stability during its early years. The program links pediatric practices affiliated with the University of Massachusetts medical school and attorneys to help patients and their families deal with legal matters. Issues include helping needy families obtain food stamps, domestic violence, special education concerns and making sure landlords keep apartments mold-free.

This questionnaire can also be used in formative evaluation, providing a means for quickly assessing the legal needs present in a particular setting (community or medical clinic) in which the creation of a new medical-legal partnership is planned.

A core component of the MLP model is training healthcare providers to recognize the connections between unmet legal needs and health. In this webinar, a physician-lawyer team from the Family Advocates of Central Massachusetts provide an overview of how to train healthcare providers in immigration advocacy. A 30 minute presentation is followed by a question and answer session.
