Sometimes traditionally perceived antagonistic relationships—such as those between lawyers and doctors—can take a 180° turn. This seemed to be the case with LegalHealth, a New York City-based group of pro-bono lawyers who team up with oncology professionals to help cancer patients navigate through some of the legal issues that might arise during the cancer experience.

The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) today opened a special legal clinic at Kings County Hospital Center run by LegalHealth, a division of the New York Legal Assistance Group, to offer free legal assistance to Haitian patients and families seeking Temporary Protected Status (TPS). “For patients from Haiti who are already facing medical and mental health needs, the added stress of their uncertain immigration status can be overwhelming,” said HHC President Alan D. Aviles. “Our collaboration with LegalHealth enables us to treat both medical and non-medical ailments – the whole patient.”

ABSTRACT:
Doctors and lawyers are learning to put aside their preconceived notions of each other’s profession and work together for the mutual benefit of their patients/clients. In the last five years, medical-legal partnerships in hospitals and health facilities have grown significantly throughout the country. These collaborations have proven effective in combating selective socio-economic impediments to health, relieving the anxiety that often accompanies a chronic health condition, and improving quality of life for vulnerable adults and children. This new partnership benefits patients, hospitals and both of these professions.

As oncology care is evermore provided in an ambulatory setting, oncology treatment teams are forced to confront family and financial issues that may expedite or impede patient treatment.
