What Types of Health Centers have Medical-Legal Partnerships?

There are three main types of health centers that have incorporated medical-legal partnership into their practice: community health centers (CHCs), federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) and look-a-like health centers.

• Community Health Center:  A healthcare organization that provides comprehensive, culturally competent, quality primary health care services to medically underserved communities and vulnerable populations. They are community-based and patient-directed organizations.  They serve populations with limited access to health care, including low-income populations, the uninsured, those with limited English proficiency, migrant and seasonal farmworkers, individuals and families experiencing homelessness, and those living in public housing.
• Federally Qualified Health Center: A public or private community health center that receives government funds under the Health Center Consolidation Act by meeting certain criteria under the Medicare and Medicaid Programs and meeting all the guidelines of Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act.
• FQHC Look-Alike:  A health center that has been identified by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) as meeting the FQHC requirements, but does not yet receive grant funding under Section 330.
