Children’s Law Center (CLC) (Washington, DC) invites applications for a full-time Investigator to work with CLC’s Health Access Project to begin immediately.

Children’s Law Center provides free, comprehensive legal services to thousands of low-income and at-risk children in Washington, DC to ensure they have safe homes, meaningful educations and healthy lives.  Applying the knowledge gained from representing children and families, we advocate for changes in the city’s laws, policies and programs. CLC’s Health Access Project is a medical-legal partnership with Children’s National Medical Center and Mary’s Center for Maternal and Child Care, Inc. – helping poor children and their families overcome barriers to good health by holding agencies, landlords, and schools accountable for inappropriate school programs and illegal, unhealthy housing conditions.

 

Position Description

The HAP Investigator will work with lawyers who represent parents and caretakers in special education, health care access and housing matters.  The position is appropriate for someone considering a legal, counseling or social work career.

 

Position Responsibilities

·        Assist lawyers with all aspects of their representation including:

o       Gathering school and medical records; 

o       Performing document review;

o       Providing observations and reports on schools and classrooms

·        Conduct intake interviews with potential clients

·        Interview clients, caretakers, teachers, medical professionals and witnesses

·        Accompany and transport clients and their children to appointments

·        Attend school and other meetings

·        Testify in hearings or trials

 

Requirements and Qualifications

·        Resourcefulness, initiative and tenacity required

·        Tact and discretion required

·        Previous experience working with low-income persons and government agencies is a plus

·        Excellent oral communication skills required

·        Car, driver’s license and auto insurance required

·        Two year commitment required

·        Spanish language ability preferred

·        College degree preferred
