Jane, a Children Law Center (CLC) client, is a devoted mother trying to make the best life possible for her children. Her eleven year-old, hearing-impaired daughter Grace lives with cerebral palsy. Jane told Grace's pediatrician she was concerned her daughter's struggles in school were due to a lack of special support.

Michael and Lucille Scott -- Jacksonville, FL

To his school, Michael was a problem student, getting to classes late and roaming around when he should have been sitting down.  But to his grandmother, Lucille Scott, Michael was a lonely teenager who needed help with his learning disabilities and Bipolar Disorder.

Michael’s doctor recognized that Michael needed an advocate.  He referred Michael and Lucille to Legal Aid, where staff attorney Rebecca Feyerick started getting Michael the support he needed.

Steven and Sue Weimer -- Baltimore, MD

When Steven Weimer was in eighth grade, his teacher often sent him to an intervention room to control his anger.   But Steven had no room to let his energy out in the tiny space, and instead of calming him down, the intervention specialist there found his outbursts amusing.

“Steven would always call me,” his mother Sue remembers, “and I could hear [the specialist] in the background laughing.”

Maurice and Melissa King -- Chicago, IL

When Maurice King went back to school, he was on crutches.   The last day he had been there, two students followed him outside as he left for home and attacked him.  The beating left Maurice with several fractures in his ankle, and a surgeon needed to insert several screws to help the injury heal.
