Greg Nelsen, MSSW

Clinical Social Worker, Pediatrics, University of Virginia Children’s Hospital

Greg Nelsen has 28 years of experience working as a social worker.  He received his BSW from Kansas University and his MSSW from the University of Texas at Arlington.  His professional work experience includes developmental disabilities, grief and bereavement and medical social work.

Mr. Nelsen has been a Clinical Social Worker in Pediatrics at the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, VA since 2001.   In 2004 he participated in the development of the first MLP in Virginia, the Child Health Advocacy Program (CHAP), a collaboration between the UVA Children’s Hospital, the Legal Aid Justice Center and the UVA Law School.  He has served as the CHAP social worker since that time, making patient referrals, administering a financial assistance fund, assisting with program development and expansion within the hospital and involvement with the development of a statewide MLP in Virginia.

Mr. Nelsen has participated in the Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic in Wise, VA, contributed to the creation of a children’s dental center for Medicaid patients, developed an advocacy program for individuals with developmental disabilities, established a guardianship assistance program and served as chair of a Human Rights Committee.  

He has received several advocacy awards as well as the Outstanding Social Worker of the Year at UVA Medical Center in 2004.  Mr. Nelsen is a strong believer in patient advocacy and in addressing the needs of patients and families in a comprehensive way.
